Sweatshop culture is the worst form of labor exploitation. Factories or workplaces that operate with extremely low wages, unsafe working environments, limitless working hours, and the denial of human rights are called 'sweatshops'.
Today, globally, in sectors like garment manufacturing (Fast Fashion), footwear, electronics, and toy manufacturing, this culture is brutally affecting the lives of millions of poor and middle-class people.
These factories mostly manufacture products for multinational corporations (Multinational Brands) at a very low cost. Even though the corporations earn massive profits, the workers employed there are paid only a few dollars (a meager few hundred rupees) a day.
This money is not even sufficient for their daily food, rent, and medical expenses. As a result, they remain trapped within the poverty cycle (Poverty Trap) generation after generation.
Legal working hour regulations are not respected in sweatshops. Workers are forced to work continuously for 14 to 16 hours a day.
Neither weekly holidays nor medical leaves are provided. In many places, if the given target is not met, workers are forced to work overtime without any additional pay. This is equivalent to modern-day slavery.
Workers labor in environments such as cramped rooms lacking adequate ventilation, the use of toxic chemicals, and extreme heat or cold.
Due to the lack of building safety, fire accidents and building collapses occur, causing many workers to lose their lives (for instance, more than 1,000 sweatshop workers died in the 2013 'Rana Plaza' building collapse in Bangladesh).
Exploiting poverty, children are also abused in these factories for extremely low wages in many places. Their education and future are completely stripped away because of this.
Many leading international clothing and mobile brands that we use today rely heavily on such sweatshops in developing countries. In the name of "Fast Fashion" and "cheap prices", we as consumers are also unknowingly contributing to this labor exploitation.
Consumers purchasing products must examine the conditions under which they were manufactured. They should support products from "Fair Trade" certified companies that pay fair wages to their workers.
Multinational corporations must ensure that labor rights are respected in the factories within their supply chain. Strict legal action must be taken against companies that violate these regulations.
